Flu Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Where can I get a flu vaccine?

A: Contact your doctor, your pharmacy or local clinic. For a list of clinics near you, go to https://MyTurn.ca.gov

Q: What is the flu vaccine?

A: The flu shot is a vaccine given with a needle, usually in the arm. The seasonal flu shot protects against the three or four influenza viruses that research indicates will be most common during the season.

Q: Who should get vaccinated this season?

A: Everyone six months of age and older should get a flu vaccine every year. Vaccination to prevent influenza is particularly important for people who are at high risk of serious complications from influenza.

Q: Are certain people at a higher risk for flu?

A: See People at High Risk of Developing Flu-Related Complications for a full list of age and health factors that confer increased risk. More information is available at Who Should Get Vaccinated Against Influenza.

Q: I think I have the flu. What now?

A: Contact your doctor or go to a local Urgent Care or local medical clinic.

Q: What’s the flu?

A: Influenza (also known as the flu) is a contagious respiratory illness caused by flu viruses. It can cause mild to severe illness, and at times can lead to death. The flu is different from a cold. The flu usually comes on suddenly.

Q: What are the symptoms of the flu?

A: People who have the flu often feel some or all of these symptoms

  • Fever* or feeling feverish/chills
  • Cough
  • Sore throat
  • Runny or stuffy nose
  • Muscle or body aches
  • Headaches
  • Fatigue (tiredness)
  • Some people may have vomiting and diarrhea though this is more common in children than adults

* It’s important to note that not everyone with flu will have a fever.

Q: Can there be more severe symptoms with the flu?

A: Most people who get influenza will recover in several days to less than two weeks, but some people will develop complications as a result of the flu. A wide range of complications can be caused by influenza virus infection of the upper respiratory tract (nasal passages, throat) and lower respiratory tract (lungs).

Q: Are there people that are more likely to get more seriously ill from the flu?

A: While anyone can get sick with flu and become severely ill, some people are more likely to experience severe flu illness. Young children, adults aged 65 years and older, pregnant women, and people with certain chronic medical conditions are among those groups of people who are at high risk of serious flu complications, possibly requiring hospitalization and sometimes resulting in death. For example, people with chronic lung disease are at higher risk of developing severe pneumonia.
